How To Use Facebook Marketplace To Sell Your Old Things

Ready to part ways with that old chair and more? Don't sweat the loss on your wallet; I've got your solution, and may have already heard of it: Facebook Marketplace.

As a seasoned KonMari Method® Consultant, I've seen clients itching to ditch their relics but held back by the guilt of getting rid of something they paid good money for. We've got a term for this dance: the sunk-cost fallacy.

One of the perks of this digital age we are in, is the ability to sell all of our wanted things in the comfort of our home. Though certainly convenient, the idea of this may seem daunting. With these simple steps, you’ll no longer have to see that old chair and you’ll have some extra cash back in your pocket!

1. Establish Your Facebook Presence

Create a Facebook account if you're not already on Facebook. A complete profile with a snapshot builds buyer trust.

2. Navigate the Marketplace

Click on the icon resembling a storefront to access the Marketplace. For selling, I using the app on your phone.

3. Spin a Tale in Your Listing

Opt for "Sell Something" and start a listing. Detail your item—title, description, price, and locale. Remember that honesty sells (and keeps people coming back) so include a description of any damage.. Be sure to leave out personal info. But its OK spill the beans on payment methods you prefer (cash, Venmo, etc.).

4. Snap It Like You Mean It

Photos are your sidekicks. Unleash high-quality images from every angle, and again, include any flaws. For furniture, I recommend you throw in the measurements as well; it will help prevent you from getting the same question over and over.

5. Play the Price Game

Check the field; set a reasonable price, even initially starting higher. Be ready to haggle and answer any questions. Bargainers be warned—you might just settle at the price you originally wanted.

6. Engage with the Right Suitor

Handle inquiries pronto. Respond, negotiate, share intel. Go with first come, first serve, but weigh the keenness, offer, and, above all, safety.

**Red Flags Alert!**

Spot spammers by their barren profiles, missing Marketplace ratings, or their nosy probing for your digits. Block and report these rogues. Keep all contact to Facebook Messenger. When in doubt, trust your gut.

7. Secure the Handoff

Found your match? Pick a safe spot for the handoff. Set it through Marketplace or private messages. Safety pro tip: bring a wingman.

8. Seal the Deal

Agree on a rendezvous. Ensure everyone's comfy, then lock it in face-to-face.

9. Flag It Sold

Post-sale, label the item as sold.

10. Bonus - Boost Your Street Cred

Don't forget to request that Marketplace rating. More stars mean more trust. With a stellar rep, future sales will breeze by.

And there you have it, a journey from clutter to cash. As you bask in the glow of a successful sale, a newfound freedom from old relics, and perhaps a few extra bucks in your pocket, let me leave you with this: What item are you most excited to sell first?
